Chapter 39

Newhome

We got to the end of the hall, past all the trappings of the Dragon on display, attempting to overawe the viewer into a sense of inferiority with his vast wealth and power. Sid didn’t have the cultural context to be affected either way, I didn’t give a shit and Otto was on duty, everything was a potential target in the protection of his principal, me.

There was another set of really big doors that were closed at the end of the hall. Just as I was going to knock politely, they swung open and we got our first look at the Dragon’s throne room or audience hall or whatever the fuck he called it. (I was thoroughly irritated by this point, can you tell?)

I’m going to take a moment to describe the setting, not because it was impressive or worthy of more than passing notice but so you’ll understand what informed my later actions.

“So flowery! Sumbitch has been pissing you off since Tony’s story and he just kept piling on. The way he ran his throne room was the final straw that pushed you way past giving a fuck, just admit it.”

Yeah. What it said.

The guy I assumed was the Dragon was lounging on a giant throne (everything was wildly oversized; could it be he was compensating?) at the far end of the room. I expect he had read about Vlad Tepes who was the origin of the Dracula legend and was trying to model his throne room after those descriptions. Well, that and early barbarian king chic, complete with chained, naked female slaves sprinkled throughout the room. No guys, interestingly enough. Also, it looked like it was only female were’s in the chains. No vampiresses (is that even a word?) were similarly restrained.

No, wait.

There were several sets of couples expanding on the bondage theme, with a few females holding the leashes of what appeared to be male weres. All the boy bits were covered up, however. Let’s see; sexist, specist, elitist, probably misogynist as well.

Yup, typical male vampire.

“Ah, you must be Milo Sapphire, the former First of the Newhome vampires,” his voice echoed creepily around the room, a breathy whisper that still managed to boom into the silence.

“Nice sound system,” I commented, laconic.

Otto glanced at me sharply, took a deep breath, rested his hands on his visible weapons.

Yeah. I was just about out of fucks to give.

“I am the Son of the Dragon, First of the Newhome vampires, the fourth of my Name. You may approach,” he announced.

“That’s nice. I need Johnny Mac; I have work for him.”

Yup, all out of fucks.

“I shall have him sent for. Perhaps we can converse, monarch to former monarch while we wait? I have so many questions,” he said.

“Yeah, whatever. I’m on a schedule so I’d appreciate it if you could expedite Johnny Mac’s appearance? I might have time to chat later.” I was, perhaps, a bit terse.

“Your manners are not what is expected from petitioners to the Dragon,” an obvious flunky, who was standing off to the side of the throne, said.
